FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT 3D DIGITAL CLOTHING SAMPLING

What is 3D digital pattern making?

Digital Pattern is a method of engineering the pattern or “blueprint” for apparel clothing using advanced 2D to 3D pattern-making software for apparel.

The process is a fusion of traditional pattern-making knowledge and technology, making it possible to check the styling, pattern balance, and fit digitally instead of making a physical sample.

The 3D digital pattern-making method eliminates the need to create multiple proto and fit samples. Before making the actual physical sample, all 2D pattern changes and adjustments can be done digitally and reviewed on a 3D digital fit model.

The advantage of using the 3D digital pattern-making process is self-evident; it dramatically reduces the time and money spent creating and reworking patterns.

3D digital method is becoming an essential part of fashion digitization, changing how our clothes are made. Sustainability awareness is rising, and 3D digital pattern-making and sampling will significantly contribute to waste reduction and digital advancement in apparel manufacturing.

What is 3D digital prototyping/sampling for clothing?

3D prototyping is a digital version of traditional clothing product development. The conventional, time-consuming apparel prototyping process is replaced by a much faster digital 3D method.

The prototyping is done via 3D simulation software. A 2D (CAD) pattern is created or imported (via DXF file), the fabric values are calibrated, and a digital sample is draped on the 3D virtual fit model. To make a 3D digital clothing sample accurately, you will need the following:

-DXF digital pattern | block pattern

-the fabric specification (content and weight)

-fit model measurements and body shape (for 3D avatar creation) or scanned model file.

With 3D virtual sampling, the need for physical sampling is significantly reduced. The benefits are manifold, including the time and money saved in sample revisions, technical and production labor hours, reduced fabric waste, and unnecessary shipping costs when requesting multiple fit samples.

What is a 3D digital avatar?

A 3D digital fit model or avatar is a digital presentation of the live fit model. 3D models are parametric avatars that can be edited and customized to your needs or an imported scanned body adapted for a digital sample fit.

Parametric avatars have a wide range of detailed adjustable body measurements, various posture positions, and customization features such as hairstyle, skin tone, age, and gender.

These features allow the creation of a specific base-sized virtual fit model that can be used repeatedly for all apparel development. Additionally, it will ensure consistency in fit and sizing per a particular apparel brand’s requirements.

What is a 3D virtual fit?

In most cases, evaluating the exact fit of the 2D pattern is difficult without seeing a sewn sample draped on the dress form or fitted on the body. 3D fit offers precisely that, but virtually.

The digital cutting pattern is translated into 3D visualization with all the characteristics of the actual sample.

3D visualization lets you see the color-coded image of the digital sample (tension map), pointing out how tight or loose the garment is on the body and its specific location.

The 3D fit evaluation results will guide garment fit assessment and subsequently necessary 2D pattern corrections (add more ease, reduce or extend the length, and similar.)
